Shipping bikes across the country can be a challenging and expensive task if not done correctly. There are some moving companies that ship your motorcycle for $400-500. If you want to do-it-yourself and save some money, I have listed an alternative. Forward Air trucking company has terminals located at most major airports, and with a little work, can be a very useful tool in getting your bike to where it needs to be. Most trials bikes used to cost around $50, but now are closer to $200 (prices vary)to ship anywhere nation-wide. CALL THEM BEFORE YOU BEGIN, and make sure that they have a terminal near you and near your desired destination. Forward offers motorcycle crates and shipping for about $375+, but must be reserved a week in advance. Then the bike must be mounted on a pallet and covered with cardboard .

BEFORE PACKING: Remove the oil and gas from your motorcycle! Shipping companies require that no fluids be in the bike. The new owner would probably like to have fresh fluids in it anyway!
PALLET CONSTRUCTION: This standard GasGas pallet is 13-1/2" wide X 68-1/2" long. A wider pallet would be easier for sending an assembled bike, maybe 20". At the front of the pallet a 4X4 is mounted securely, and has a 1" hole drilled through it. The width of the 4x4 should be the same as the distance between your forks. MOUNTING THE BIKE: After removing the front wheel, secure the forks by bolting the axle through the 4x4. A small piece of rope can also be used to tie the rear wheel down. If you're not comfortable with the bike's stability, add a piece of rope to each side and tie from the footpegs (or frame) down TIGHT to the pallet. The front and rear fender should be wrapped in protective bubble wrap or cloth and packed under the bike. Remove the handlebars and tape them to the side of the bike with the controls still attached. Replace the bar saddle mounts and bolts in their original position. Place the front wheel along side of the bike and tape it to the bike. BOX: Wrap the bike with stiff cardboard. I have used appliance-box cardboard many times. The corners can be stapled to a 1x1 wood frame work if necessary. Lots of shipping tape will usually do just fine! Local Trials bike dealers will usually have extra pallets and cardboard if you ask!
